On August 1st, 1975, Teresa Lyn Fittin left her apartment to go for a drive, leaving her money, her belongings, and her boyfriend behind at her apartment. She has not been seen since.

Details of the crime

Teresa, at the time of her disappearance, lived in her apartment with her boyfriend. She was a senior at Stranahan high school. She had dreams for the future of becoming an oceanographer or an artist. In order to help make end meet, she worked as a server at a local beachfront hotel. Things seemed normal in her life at the moment, but no one could have predicted the mystery that would follow.

After an argument with her boyfriend on August 1st 1975, Teresa Lyn Fittin left her apartment telling her boyfriend she was going for a quick drive to cool off. She got into her greenish grey Nash Rambler and drove off, never to be seen again. She left without taking any of her belongings, including $300 which she left on her dresser. There has been no activity on her bank account since her disappearance. When she did not return, her boyfriend reported her missing.

When authorities arrived to look into the report, Teresa's boyfriend informed them that Teresa was pregnant at the time of her disappearance, however this information was rejected by her family, especially her mother, who had never heard of such news from her daughter and was certain that if this information had been true her daughter would have told her. While her family seemed unaware of any news of Teresa being pregnant, they were aware of the couple's problems, as they stated that it was not unusual for the couple to argue on a regular basis. They did not see it as too alarming.

For a while, the family remained certain that they knew all there was to know about Teresa's life. Then they learned that while Teresa was not involved in serious drugs, she did smoke marijuana regularly. Even after this, remained adamant that if she had been pregnant she would have told them.

After all this, authorities had no idea where her car was, where she was going, or where she even may have stopped.  It was as if she had simply vanished and not left any traces of her whereabouts. Until ten days after her disappearance, when her wallet was discovered at one of the local Fort Lauderdale libraries. However this was the first and only belonging of hers ever found, and her greenish grey car has never been found.

Theories

Teresa's Boyfriend

The fact that her and her boyfriend appeared to be having troubles, along with the fact that he was the last person to see her alive, lead some people to believe that he has something to do with her disappearance. Some people believe their fight got violent, and he murdered her and disposed of her body and her car. If this is the case, then why get rid of the car? Unless it had evidence. In that case, how did he get back to the apartment without her car in time to report her missing, and why has her body never been found? A crime like this seems like it would require premeditation to accomplish. Maybe he does, but I personally find it unlikely that he would be able to successfully hide the truth for so long if he was involved in her death.

Some think maybe he did not kill her, but he knows more than he is telling the authorities. He might know where she went, or where she was heading to. Perhaps he said she was pregnant to throw off authorities, as the family seems convinced that she would have told them. On that note though, lying to authorities about her being pregnant would not throw them off that much, why bother lying about that at all? On another note, she was a high school senior at the time of her disappearance, and yet she did not live with her parents. This seems highly unusual, and indicates to some that perhaps her relationship with her family was not as good as they seemed to think?

Teresa's Family

This one seems even less likely than her boyfriend being involved, but will be included none the less. Say her and her family really did not get along. Maybe somebody in her family saw the early pregnancy of an unmarried, high school girl in their family something to keep quiet. Maybe they did not intend to murder her, but there was some sort of accident? It's important to consider all options, especially in cases where there is not much information available to the public.

Voluntary Disappearance

What we do know is that Teresa and her boyfriend fought regularly. She was also in high school, working as a server at a hotel, living in an apartment, certainly not in a good spot in her life to have a child. Perhaps she really was pregnant, and was unhappy in her relationship. Maybe she did not want to raise her child in that relationship. If that was the case, she could have simply decided to leave and make a new life for herself somewhere else. Maybe their fights were turning violent, and she was afraid for the safety of her unborn child.

If she did decide to leave, why not ask her family for help? Even if she was not close to her family, or if they had bad blood, why would she leave her $300 on the dresser just sitting around instead of taking it with her? If she was living in her car then why has nobody seen her car? With no money and nobody she knew to help her go into hiding, how has she managed to stay hidden this long? It is possible that she was running away and met with foul play, but who is her killer and where is her body?

Random Foul Play

Anything from a random act of violence to a stranger kidnapping, or even a calculated act by a suspect we have yet to identify. Honestly with a case like this almost any of those could be a possibility.
